NASDAQ-100-From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NASDAQ-100 is a stock market index of 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the NASDAQ. It is a modified capitalization-weighted index. The companies’ weights in the index are based on their market capitalizations, with certain rules capping the influence of the largest components. It does not contain financial companies, and includes companies incorporated outside theUnited States. Both of those factors differentiate it from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the exclusion of financial companies distinguishes it from the S&P 500 Index.

We work every day to make information available to everyone on the web. This week we made it easier for to you pinpoint exactly the information you need with a new advanced search feature that categorizes results by reading level. For example, if you’re writing a college paper on [herbivores] you can refine to see only advanced material, or if you’re a grade school teacher preparing for a class on [herbivores] you can refine to see only basic material. To try it out, click “advanced search” to the right of the search box and click in the new reading level section. YouTube is now offering parents and teachers more control over the content they see with the announcement of Safety Mode. When you opt in to Safety Mode, you’re choosing not to see mature videos and comments that aren’t against ourCommunity Guidelines, but may not be appropriate for someone under 18. Like Google SafeSearch, Safety Mode on YouTube does not remove content from the site but rather keeps it off the page for users who opt in. No filter is 100%, so keep in mind that supervision is still the best parental control. Check out the demo!

The Leland Stanford Junior University, commonly referred to as Stanford University or Stanford, is a private research university on an 8,180-acre (3,310 ha) campus located near Palo Alto, California. It is situated in the northwestern Santa Clara Valley on the San Francisco Peninsula, approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of San Jose and 37 miles (60 km) southeast of San Francisco.[6]

Leland Stanford, a Californian railroad tycoon and politician, founded the university in 1891 in honor of his son, Leland Stanford, Jr. who died of typhoid two months before his 16th birthday. The university was established as a coeducational and nondenominational institution, but struggled financially after the senior Stanford’s 1893 death and much of the campus was damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Following World War II, Provost Frederick Terman supported faculty and graduates’ entrepreneurialism to build self-sufficient local industry in what would become known as Silicon Valley. By 1970, Stanford was home to a linear accelerator, one of the original four ARPANET nodes, and had transformed itself into a major research university in computer sciencemathematicsnatural sciences, and social sciences. More than 50 Stanford faculty, staff and alumni have won the Nobel Prize (list of Nobel Laureates by university affiliation). Stanford also boasts the largest number of Turing award winners for a single institution. Stanford faculty and alumni have founded many prominent technology companies; according to Forbes Magazine “it is almost impossible to name a leading-edge company in Silicon Valley that isn’t closely associated with Stanford;” examples include Cisco SystemsGoogleHewlett-PackardLinkedInNetscape CommunicationsRambus,Silicon GraphicsSun MicrosystemsVarian Associates, and Yahoo!.[7]

The university is organized into seven schools including academic schools of Humanities and Sciences and Earth Sciences as well as professional schools of BusinessEducationEngineeringLaw, and Medicine. Stanford has a student body of approximately 6,900 undergraduate[5] and 8,400 graduate students.[5] Stanford is a founding member of the Association of American Universities and in 2010 managed US$1.15 billion in research funding and $15.9 billion in endowment support, with $21.4 billion in consolidated net assets.[3][8]

Stanford competes in 34 varsity sports and is one of two private universities in the NCAA Division I-A Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford’s athletic program has won the NACDA Directors’ Cup every year since 1995.[9] In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Stanford athletes won 25 medals, including 8 gold medals, more than any other university in the United States.[10]

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQYHOO) is an American public corporation with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, (in Silicon Valley), that provides services via the Internet worldwide. The company is perhaps best known for its web portalsearch engine (Yahoo! Search), Yahoo! DirectoryYahoo! MailYahoo! Newsadvertising, online mapping (Yahoo! Maps), video sharing (Yahoo! Video), and social media websites and services.

Yahoo! was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994 and was incorporated on March 1, 1995. On January 13, 2009, Yahoo! appointedCarol Bartz, former executive chairperson of Autodesk, as its new chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors.[2]

History and growth

Main article: History of Yahoo!

In January 1994, Jerry Yang and David Filo were Electrical Engineering graduate students at Stanford University when they created a website named “David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web”.[3] David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web was a directory of other web sites, organized in a hierarchy, as opposed to a searchable index of pages. In April 1994, “David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web” was renamed “Yahoo!”.[4][5] The domain was created on January 18, 1995.[6]

Yahoo! grew rapidly throughout the 1990s. Like many search engines and web directories, Yahoo! diversified into a Web portal. It also made many high-profile acquisitions. Its stock price skyrocketed during the dot-com bubble, Yahoo! stocks closing at an all-time high of $118.75 a share on 3 January 2000. However, after the dot-com bubble burst, it settled at a post-bubble low of $4.05 on 26 September 2001 (adjusted for splits).

In 2000, Yahoo! began using Google for search results. Over the next four years, it developed its own search technologies, which it began using in 2004. Yahoo! also revamped its mail service to compete with Google’s Gmail in 2007. The company struggled through 2008, with several large layoffs.

In February 2008, Microsoft Corporation made an unsolicited bid to acquire Yahoo! for USD $44.6 billion. Yahoo! subsequently formally rejected the bid, claiming that it “substantially undervalues” Yahoo! and was not in the interest of its shareholders. Three years later, Yahoo! had a stock market capitalization of USD $22.24 billion.[7] Carol Bartz replaced cofounder Jerry Yang in January 2009[8]
